Regardless of the frame material, traction and smoothness across rough terrain are definitely improved with a 29er.
The bigger tyres have a greater contact surface improving traction and grip whether climbing, descending, cornering or braking.
One downside is additional weight, but the payback is additional comfort. The greater air volume in the tyres gives additional suspension, but more importantly the bigger wheels hit obstacles at a shallower angle therefore rolling over them with greater ease than a smaller wheel.
The longer wheel base necessary to accommodate the 29” wheels provide both stability and greater comfort.
There are significant geometry tweaks required to balance out the bigger wheels, the BB has to drop comparatively lower on a 29er than on 26 wheels, and the head tube has to be as short as possible with a negative rise stem to keep the front end on the ground whilst climbing.
