Bike Buyer Assembly Safety Check List
95% new bikes bought from Fat Birds Don’t Fly come fully built unless your bike is brought in parts or requested un-built. However some bicycles (special 1-off  deals) come un-built.

What we do before we ship your bike?

Every bike purchased online or via mail order with Fat Birds Don’t Fly is fully built by a highly experienced mechanic unless the bike is brought in parts or the buyer requests it un-built. The bike is then boxed and ready to be shipped, with only a couple of minor alterations required to get the bike on the road.

Bicycle assembly advice and instructions

Thank you for purchasing your cycle from Fat Birds Don’t Fly. We hope this cycle will bring you years of pleasure. Your cycle will need some minor assembly after being delivered. Please follow the bike instructions carefully:

1) Clamp the handlebars onto the handlebar stem ensuring the two (or four) bolts are tightened evenly.

2) Insert the front wheel into the forks. Tighten the nut side of the quick release lever until it bites, and then close the lever side tightly. If it doesn't close tightly then give the nut another half turn and try again. If the lever does not close then you need to back the nut off slightly. Check the wheel is straight in the forks; the two brake pads should meet the rim evenly. If the wheel is in crooked, undo the quick release lever, then place your weight on the front of the bike and close the lever.

3) Fit the seat post and saddle into the frame. This should tighten with either a 5mm Allen key or quick release lever. Make sure the seat post is inserted beyond minimum insertion line marked on the post.

4) Bolt the pedals on to the crank arms using a 15mm spanner. Careful! The left pedal works with an opposite thread; they are marked on the ends of the axle as ‘L’ for left and ‘R’ for right.

Every bike sold via mail order must be checked by a trained cycle mechanic before use

If you have any difficulty assembling the cycle then call our customer service line and they will put you through to one of our mechanics (01485 535875).

All our bikes sold locally come back to our shop for a free safety check after a month. Obviously we cannot offer this service on mail order bikes as these are often heavily discounted anyway but we recommend that you get your cycle checked at a local bike shop or cycle dealer within the first two months.

All new bikes and cycles will ˜bed in' (the same as your handbrake cable on your car), though we do what we can by using pre-stretched cables. Bicycles with suspension frames need to have all pivot points checked and tightened after every ride.

Bushings wear when pivots are left loose and for this reason worn bushings cannot be claimed under the manufacturers warranty. Please read through the owners' manual for specific maintenance details on your cycle. If you did not receive one please call the customer service line (01485 535875).

If you feel you have a warranty claim, we must take the bike back to examine it. We will pay the cost of the carriage if the claim is successful. Claims may take up to fourteen days (including shipping time). We recommend that you should keep your bike box flat packed for future use, please see ‘Returns’ for more details.

We also recommend that you make a note of the frame number in case the cycle is stolen. This can usually be found stamped on the underside of the frame where the crank axle passes through the frame.
