Brake levers are usually mounted on the handlebars within easy reach of the rider's hands. They may be distinct or integrated into the shifting mechanism. Road bicycles with drop handlebars may have more than one brake lever for each brake to facilitate braking from multiple hand positions these are known as Crosstop style brake levers and are becoming popular on cyclocross, tourers and road bikes, these fit in line with the brake cables and allow you to control the brakes from the tops of the handlebars. Some brake levers will incorporate the gear levers as well, these are known as Double Tap, Ergo's or Sti's (Shimano Total Integration), this makes shifting through the gears and braking a simultaneous operation and cornering at speed a lot safer.
